Migrating Videos from YouTube to Kaltura

Faculty, staff, and students who have previously published content to YouTube for sharing and for using in Blackboard might consider migrating content to Kaltura.  Advantages of hosting content on Kaltura over YouTube include elimination of advertisements and related videos, playback through the NIU player, and access to Kaltura analytics.  To migrate content from YouTube to Kaltura, download the existing video from your YouTube channel and upload to Kaltura.  If you have previously edited the YouTube captions, you can also download the SRT file and upload to Kaltura.  You can of course host the content on both YouTube and Kaltura.

Download from YouTube:

  1. Login to YouTube with your account name and password.
  2. In the upper right, click on the profile icon, if necessary use Switch Account to select the proper channel.
  3. In the profile menu, click YouTube Studio.
  4. In the left channel navigation, click Videos or use the search to locate the video you would like to migrate.
  5. Hover over the video you would like to migrate, click the three-dot menu item and then Download, this will begin the video download (will download as an MP4).

Upload to Kaltura:

  1. Login to Mediaspace or Blackboard/Kaltura My Media.
  2. Click Add New and choose Upload Media.
  3. Drag and drop a file or click Choose a file to upload.
  4. Complete the details form for the media including the media title and description.
  5. Consider adding descriptive tags (words or phrases) to aid searching and categorization.
  6. Use the Add Collaborator button to share co-editing or co-publishing rights with other faculty, staff, or students. Co-editors can view and modify media; co-publishers can share and publish videos in courses using Kaltura tools in Blackboard or on the web using Mediaspace.
  7. If uploading via Kaltura My Media in Blackboard, do not modify the Publishing Status. If using Mediaspace, media marked Private will be visible to the content owner and collaborators only; Unlisted media will be visible to anyone with the link; Published media will be visible to anyone with access to the published destinations (such as channels and playlists displayed on MediaSpace).
  8. Click Save.
  9. Click Go to Media to view the media or Go to My Media to view your media library.
